A very short pattern that we accidentally created at the EJC 2024 while trying to create Ambled Mini Scrambleds, but we ended up arriving at something entirely different.
The base pattern is just 3 beats long before it repeats — a 10-club walking feed that comes around to the beginning after only 9 throws. After walking across to the other side, there are only 3 passes on 2-count: “left, right, right” before one starts walking again.
3 beats are not enough to fit in the manipulation (intercept + carry) that I wanted, but I realized one thing: more clubs manipulators are always the solution! By making M intercept a self while N carries a pass and vice versa, an intercept can happen every 3 beats, thus covering all positions.
While juggling this, we realized that after each intercept, both the juggler and old manipulator have a long pause before they get busy again, so we decided to make them “clink” together their clubs while they have nothing to do (inspired by Wiebke’s Waltz). It turned out that they have time for not just one, but TWO clinks!
After some busy clinking, we noticed that this creates a rhythm with some suspicious similarities with a famous Rock song …
Manipulation
All the manipulation and the passes are right-handed.
People’s positions in the room end up forming some kind of pentagon, where nobody really moves all that much.
What you do can be summarized like this:
- carry to the person on your left
- receive a pelf from them and clink your clubs twice with them
- step back to do your very short 2-count passing sequence of “right, right”
- receive a carry from the person on your right
- give them back a pelf and clink twice with them
