Cold Shoulder

Freiburg, September 2024

Pattern type: takeout

Cold Shoulder is a new pattern that copies the manipulation of the regular roundabout into a three count base pattern. After a bit of fooling around with different styles of manipulation we came up with a version that doesn’t have zips, therefore contains a magic club that is never thrown – the perfect attribute to make it a beer passing pattern, or in our case an ice cream passing pattern.

The pattern is based on a 3-count between two people. Because the 3-count is repeated twice during one manipulation sequence, it is not an ambidextrous pattern – the manipulation only happens on the right handed pass.

The Pass Substitute on the first beat is similar to the one from the regular roundabout, only that the catching and handing in happens with the same (the left) hand and the manipulator is standing at the outer side of the pattern.

Unlike the 4-count roundabout the receiving juggler directly answers with a pop on the left hand, which is also already the steal part of the self substitute on beat 2. The manipulator takes the pop with the left hand and continues the substitute with the ‘Ice cream’-movement (also know as german turn) only that the ice cream ends up on the jugglers right shoulder. (The direction and amount of turns is up to creative freedom)

After handing over the ice cream the manipulator catches the pass from juggler A in the same free hand. This is the intercept, therefore the manipulator and juggler B switch roles.

The new manipulator now holds the Ice cream in the right hand, so the carry on beat 5 and the following pass substitute are both done with the left hand. Unlike in the 4-count roundabout there is no zip here.

If you decide not to juggle this with an ice cream or other non throwable object, the manipulation can be done with both hands including zips like in the regular roundabout.

Feel free to add extra spins in the pattern or play around with the types of manipulation!
