We were inspired to add a manipulator to Techno and came up with four variations! These 8-club patterns were first juggled in Albuquerque, New Mexico by Lana Bolin, Ian Chesser and Omar Ramirez. We named our favorite variant, Techniquerque, after the city of invention itself.
A thorough description of the 2-person, 7-club base pattern Techno can be found here: https://ckaestne.github.io/modernpassing/2e-beyond.html.
We have gotten a full round of only the first pattern (Tech Yea) and a bit over a quarter round of the three other patterns. We invite you to try to get a full round 🙂
Instructions
C = Carry, S = Substitute, I2 = Intercepted Pass (2 beats), I1 = Intercepted Self (1 beat)
Pattern 1: Tech Yea (C I2) is a techno-about where passes are intercepted. The carry is extra slow (because the self before the carry can be skipped) and there is time for a spin. Four passes are thrown before each carry.
Pattern 2: Tech No (C I1) is a techno-about where selfs are intercepted. The self intercepts are tricky in this pattern, hence the lack of positivity in the name!
Pattern 3: New Technico (C S I2) adds a substitute to Tech Yea.
Pattern 4: Techniquerque (C S I1) adds a substitute to Tech No. We ended up intercepting the selfs in a different way in this pattern compared to Tech No. We suggest exploring how best to deal with the self intercept and keeping an open mind 🙂
In video 1, we start on the intercepted pass. In videos 2-4, we start on the carry. The passer whose club is being carried always starts self, self. The passer who is receiving the carried pass always starts with self, (pass, self), where (pass,self) is the simultaneous pair of throws that frees up the hand being carried to.
These are ambidextrous patterns with four types of carried passes per juggler. The patterns can be organized by total length: 3 x 12 (CI1), 5 x 12 (CI2), 5 x 12 (CSI1), and 7 x 12 beats (CSI2). Note that Tech Yes and New Technico have an odd period with an extra beat between the intercept and carry (thanks to Christian Kästner for pointing out a mistake in the original notation which omitted this extra beat).
